Learning Differences

The second InTASC standard, Learning Differences, is significant because it requires the teacher to recognize the diversity of each student in his/her classroom including the diverse cultures, communities, developmental levels, and individual interests of the student.  Recognizing and respecting the individual differences of the students who make up her/his classroom allows the teacher to foster an inclusive classroom which supports all students.

I demonstrate the Learning Differences standard by using flexible grouping.  With flexible grouping I see how my students interact with the subject and each other in pairs, small groups, and as a whole class.  Working with and observing a smaller number of students at a time allows me to better understand those students as individuals.

I also showcase the Learning Differences standard by offering multiple modes of response during class discussions.  By utilizing tools such as SmartPals I give students who are more apprehensive about responding orally in a class discussion another way to participate and be heard.  Taking surveys of responses and allowing students to “turn and talk” gives students who are comfortable sharing their responses the opportunity to do so.

The Learning Differences standard is apparent in the supports I use for my English Language Learners (ELL) including this emoticon traits and feelings chart.  Visuals like this chart help expand vocabulary and understanding for all of my students but are especially helpful for my ELL students.
